Part III-Prophecy

One Week Later

Another week expired with no word from Alexa. Dylan tried to bury his fear in hard work, focusing on his new czarship. The male citizens whacked at sandy soil, using their picks and shovels. Until that moment, Adam had played bad cop. While he wielded the whip, Mr. Hunter continued to inspire. Dylan motivated with words rather than abuse. That was about to change.

Marco fell to the ground in pain, holding his leg. Dylan went to help him up, stopped by Adam’s hand. “I gave you a whip for a reason!” Adam chastised.

Looking down at the weapon in his hands, Mr. Hunter replied, “To be used when necessary. It hasn’t been.”

“I say it’s necessary now! Your lenience has made them soft, spoiled. The colony has a large shipment going out. These crops you see in the distance...they’ll be gone. I need results now. Teach him a lesson...the others will learn from.”

“He’s hurt! What lesson is there in that? That they’re just tools...useful fucking idiots?”

Adam leaned into Dylan’s face. “Exactly.”

“And what shipment? I thought this food belonged to us all?” Dylan inquired.

“You own nothing. Shut your mouth and do your job. No more questions!”

A furious Mr. Hunter headed towards Marco. He leaned down to his friend. “Where does it hurt?”

“My leg! I felt a pop in my calf...I think it’s just strained, not sure. I need the medic!”

Dylan turned towards Adam. “You heard him. He needs the medic.”

An angered Adam stomped towards the men. He shouted, “Who gives a shit what he says! If he goes to the medic...they all go to the medic! No workers...no food! No food...no life! Get him up and working...or I’ll beat you both!”

Mr. Hunter’s teeth scraped in frustration. Fury filled his soul, as his hand grasped the whip. Standing tall, he helped Marco to his feet. Handing his friend the pickaxe, Dylan gave him space. Shaky and pained, the Hispanic man tried to keep his balance. Swinging the tool with force, Marco crashed again.

“I’ll take his place,” Dylan said, dropping his whip to the ground. After moving Marco out of the way, Hunter swung at the dirt, not looking back. The other colonists shifted their eyes to the situation. They eagerly awaited the outcome. Their hope was on Dylan, bets on Adam.

Within moments, the sound of a sharp whip filled the air. Dylan grunted, bending over in stinging pain. He remained standing. Refusing to fall, he began swinging again. Adam hurled another lashing, crackling Mr. Hunter’s back.

Cringing, Dylan fought through it. He swung the axe again, inviting another whipping. Yet another round was exchanged. He refused to fall. Finally, a whipping to his head and cheek took him down. Writhing on the floor, he cooled the burning pain in unearthed dirt.

Another scream filled the air. Forcing his sore eyelids open, Dylan gazed upon Marco. His injured calf was whipped directly. Screaming in pain, Marco rolled around. The blows kept coming.

Dylan shouted, “Get up! Get up! He’ll kill you!” Lifting the injured worker to the knees, he placed the pick in-hands.
